Where the data lives

Vanta is a hosted service. You pick a US, EU or Australian region, and Vanta's help center notes that some supporting services and subprocessors may run outside it.

ProofTrail is one Docker image you run on your own server, with SQLite holding the data. Integrations sync into that server, the device agent reports to it and the trust center is served from it.

Breadth

Vanta lists 35+ frameworks, among them HITRUST, FedRAMP and NIS2, which ProofTrail doesn't have, and pulls data from 400+ tools. Its plans add AI answers to security questionnaires, which ProofTrail has no equivalent for.

ProofTrail has 21 frameworks and 260 integrations in its catalog. 28 of them sync through their own API driver, and the rest connect through SCIM 2.0 or uploaded exports.

Price

Vanta publishes no prices. Its four plans are quoted after a demo, and Essentials covers one framework.

Where it runs and your data	One Docker image on your own server runs the web server, the queue worker and the scheduler. The data lives in a SQLite database on that server, which also holds the queue and the cache. The source is available under the Elastic License 2.0.	Vanta hosts it, in a US, EU or Australian region, each with its own sign-in address. Vanta says the region sets where your environment is hosted, but not that every supporting service or subprocessor stays in it.

Device checks	An agent for macOS, Linux and Windows reports disk encryption, screen lock, firewall, anti-malware and OS updates every 4 hours. Staff can also report a device by hand in the portal.	The Vanta Device Monitor checks disk encryption, screen lock and antivirus on macOS 12 or later and 64-bit Windows 10 and 11. On Debian and Ubuntu it checks disk encryption only.
Auditors	External auditors get their own portal at /auditor to review evidence, request information and raise findings. Audits have stages, dated milestones and a pre-audit evidence review. You bring your own audit firm.	Auditors sign in to a separate auditor portal and see only the engagements you assign them, within the observation window. Vanta has an auditor network, and you can bring your own auditor. Essentials includes an Auditor API.
Trust center	A page at /trust with your frameworks, live control status, policies, subprocessors, an FAQ and documents behind an NDA. It can be private, split into profiles and served on your own domain, and it reports views, requests and downloads.	In every plan from Essentials, with an Advanced Trust Center on Professional, and sold on its own too. It shows live control status, shares documents after access approval and NDAs, and lets Vanta AI answer visitors' questions.
