ProofTrail vs eramba
eramba is a GRC tool you can run on your own server for free with its Community edition, or buy as Enterprise for a flat €2,500 a year on your servers or €5,000 hosted by eramba. It keeps registers of risks, compliance requirements, controls and incidents, with 70+ compliance packages, and it says it doesn't watch your cloud accounts. ProofTrail also runs on your own server, and it connects to your cloud, code, identity provider and devices to check them against its frameworks.

Both on your own server
eramba Community runs on your own server for free, with no user or time limit, and Enterprise costs a flat €2,500 a year on your servers. Community needs outbound access to eramba's support server. eramba can also host Enterprise for €5,000 a year.
ProofTrail runs as one Docker image on your own server and costs $20 a year per installation, with SQLite as its only infrastructure.
Registers or monitoring
eramba is built around registers of risks, requirements, controls, policies and incidents, with controls tested on a schedule. Its SOC 2 and ISO 27001 pages say it doesn't watch or collect evidence from your cloud accounts.
ProofTrail connects to cloud accounts, code hosts, identity providers and devices, re-runs the checks of the frameworks you enable every day, out of 184, and opens a task with a deadline for each failure. It also has a trust center, an employee portal and a device agent, which aren't among eramba's modules.
Breadth
eramba offers 70+ compliance packages, among them NIST 800-53, HITRUST, NIS2, FedRAMP and ISO 22301, which ProofTrail doesn't have, and you can import your own as CSV. eramba has an AI assistant in every edition from version 4.0.0.
ProofTrail has 21 frameworks, each mapped to its controls, checks and policy templates.
Which one to pick
Pick ProofTrail if
- You want your cloud, code, identity provider and devices checked automatically.
- You want a trust center, an employee portal and a device agent in the same app.
- You want an integration catalog of 260, 28 of them through their own API.
Pick eramba if
- You want a free edition with no user or time limit.
- You need NIST 800-53, HITRUST, NIS2, FedRAMP or another package ProofTrail doesn't have.
- You want risk, compliance and incident registers more than automated checks.
- You want the vendor to host it for you, in the EU or the US.
The details
| Detail | ProofTrail | eramba |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $20 a year per installation. One license key covers 1 production and 1 staging installation. | Community is free, with no limit on users, time or data, and no support from eramba. Enterprise is a flat €2,500 a year on your servers or €5,000 hosted by eramba, with unlimited users and email support. Implementation workshops cost €800 each. |
| Where it runs and your data | One Docker image on your own server runs the web server, the queue worker and the scheduler. The data lives in a SQLite database on that server, which also holds the queue and the cache. The source is available under the Elastic License 2.0. | On your own server, with Docker or a VMware, AWS or Azure image, from 1 vCPU and 4 GB of RAM. Community needs outbound access to support-v3.eramba.org and can't run fully offline. eramba can also host Enterprise in the EU or the US. Community and Enterprise share the same code. |
| Frameworks | 21 frameworks in 26 YAML files, as SOC 2's five criteria and CMMC's two levels each have a file: SOC 2, ISO 27001:2022, HIPAA, GDPR, PCI DSS 4.0.1, NIST CSF 2.0, CMMC Levels 1 and 2, CIS Controls 8.1, CSA STAR, Cyber Essentials, ISO 27017, ISO 27018, ISO 27701, ISO 42001, TISAX, Microsoft SSPA, DORA, CCPA, PIPEDA, DPDP and FCRA. Enabling one loads its controls, checks and policy templates. | 70+ compliance packages imported from CSV, among them ISO 27001, SOC 2, NIST CSF 2.0, NIST 800-53, PCI DSS v4, HIPAA, GDPR, HITRUST, DORA, NIS2, TISAX, CMMC 2.0 and FedRAMP, with no per-framework fee. Your own frameworks import the same way. |
| Controls and checks | 140 shared controls plus 49 for single frameworks, and 184 checks. Checks re-run every day and whenever the data they read changes. Each failing person, device or system gets a task that moves from due to critical to failing on the check's deadline, and exceptions can carry an expiry date. | Internal controls are tested on a schedule, by hand or automatically, and a failed test raises a finding. eramba says it doesn't watch or collect evidence from your cloud accounts, so an automated test has to point at a system that holds the answer. |
| Integrations | 260 in the catalog. 28 sync through their own API driver, among them AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, GitHub, GitLab, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Okta, Jamf and Jira. The others connect through SCIM 2.0 or uploaded exports, and 4 of the 260 can't be connected yet. CSV and JSON ingestion plans, webhooks and an API bring in anything else. | No connectors to cloud accounts. Enterprise lists notifications, a REST API and MCP for your own AI tools, with Slack and Teams planned. Community has no REST API or custom notifications. |
| Policy templates | 45 templates written for ProofTrail: 27 policies, 13 procedures and 5 ISMS documents and records. Versions, approvals, reviewers, periodic reviews and acceptance tracked per staff member. When a template changes, the policies list shows which documents need an update. | Free GRC templates under CC BY 4.0, among them policies, internal controls and questionnaires. Policies are written, reviewed, approved and published through a portal. |
| Staff | An employee portal where staff accept policies, take trainings with quizzes (6 programs), report devices, check their MFA, request vendors, submit risks and report incidents. Onboarding and offboarding deadlines, background checks, and access reviews of critical systems. | Awareness programs, for policy attestations and training, and automated account reviews come with Enterprise. Community doesn't include them. |
| Device checks | An agent for macOS, Linux and Windows reports disk encryption, screen lock, firewall, anti-malware and OS updates every 4 hours. Staff can also report a device by hand in the portal. | None. Device checks aren't among the seven modules eramba lists. |
| Auditors | External auditors get their own portal at /auditor to review evidence, request information and raise findings. Audits have stages, dated milestones and a pre-audit evidence review. You bring your own audit firm. | Auditors get a read-only eramba account scoped to what they need to see. Reports include the Statement of Applicability, generated from the compliance analysis. |
| Trust center | A page at /trust with your frameworks, live control status, policies, subprocessors, an FAQ and documents behind an NDA. It can be private, split into profiles and served on your own domain, and it reports views, requests and downloads. | None. A trust center isn't among the seven modules eramba lists: risk, compliance, data privacy, incidents, awareness, account reviews and online assessments. |
