ProofTrail vs Drata

Drata is a compliance and GRC platform that Drata hosts, with addresses in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. It lists 30+ pre-built frameworks and connects to hundreds of tools, and it sells its Trust Center and third-party risk management apart from its compliance plans, all priced after a demo. ProofTrail checks the same kinds of systems against 21 frameworks from one Docker image on a server you run, with the trust center and vendor management in the same app.

Where the data lives

Drata is a hosted service, with API addresses in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. It added a data center in Sydney in 2025.

ProofTrail is one Docker image you run on your own server, with SQLite holding the data. Integrations sync into that server, the device agent reports to it and the trust center is served from it.

What is sold separately

Drata's compliance plans start with one framework on Foundation, for up to 50 employees. Its Trust Center and third-party risk management have their own plans, and user access reviews and extra frameworks are add-ons.

ProofTrail costs $20 a year per installation. The trust center, vendor management, risk registers and access reviews are part of the same app.

Breadth

Drata lists 30+ frameworks, among them FedRAMP, HITRUST and NIS 2, which ProofTrail doesn't have. Its Trust Center plans include AI help with security questionnaires, which ProofTrail has no equivalent for.

The details

Detail ProofTrail Drata
Price $20 a year per installation. One license key covers 1 production and 1 staging installation. Not published. Every plan leads to a demo. Foundation is for up to 50 employees and one framework out of SOC 2, ISO 27001, Cyber Essentials, HIPAA and GDPR. Advanced takes any framework, and Enterprise adds more risk and compliance-as-code features. The Trust Center and third-party risk management are priced on their own.
Where it runs and your data One Docker image on your own server runs the web server, the queue worker and the scheduler. The data lives in a SQLite database on that server, which also holds the queue and the cache. The source is available under the Elastic License 2.0. Drata hosts it. Its API has North American, European and Asia-Pacific addresses, and Drata opened a data center in Sydney in 2025.
Frameworks 21 frameworks in 26 YAML files, as SOC 2's five criteria and CMMC's two levels each have a file: SOC 2, ISO 27001:2022, HIPAA, GDPR, PCI DSS 4.0.1, NIST CSF 2.0, CMMC Levels 1 and 2, CIS Controls 8.1, CSA STAR, Cyber Essentials, ISO 27017, ISO 27018, ISO 27701, ISO 42001, TISAX, Microsoft SSPA, DORA, CCPA, PIPEDA, DPDP and FCRA. Enabling one loads its controls, checks and policy templates. 30+ pre-built, among them SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA, GDPR, PCI DSS, FedRAMP, CMMC, HITRUST, TISAX, NIS 2, DORA and ISO 42001. Custom frameworks are an add-on from Advanced.
Controls and checks 140 shared controls plus 49 for single frameworks, and 184 checks. Checks re-run every day and whenever the data they read changes. Each failing person, device or system gets a task that moves from due to critical to failing on the check's deadline, and exceptions can carry an expiry date. Pre-mapped controls with automated tests, custom controls and compliance as code on every plan. Custom connections and tests come with Advanced.
Integrations 260 in the catalog. 28 sync through their own API driver, among them AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, GitHub, GitLab, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Okta, Jamf and Jira. The others connect through SCIM 2.0 or uploaded exports, and 4 of the 260 can't be connected yet. CSV and JSON ingestion plans, webhooks and an API bring in anything else. Hundreds of tools, by its integrations page, and Drata's own pages give figures from 180+ to 300+ pre-built integrations. An open API on every plan.
Policy templates 45 templates written for ProofTrail: 27 policies, 13 procedures and 5 ISMS documents and records. Versions, approvals, reviewers, periodic reviews and acceptance tracked per staff member. When a template changes, the policies list shows which documents need an update. Policy templates on every compliance plan.
Staff An employee portal where staff accept policies, take trainings with quizzes (6 programs), report devices, check their MFA, request vendors, submit risks and report incidents. Onboarding and offboarding deadlines, background checks, and access reviews of critical systems. Staff complete their tasks on My Drata pages. Drata tracks security awareness training, policy acknowledgements and background checks for everyone. User access reviews are an add-on before Enterprise.
Device checks An agent for macOS, Linux and Windows reports disk encryption, screen lock, firewall, anti-malware and OS updates every 4 hours. Staff can also report a device by hand in the portal. The Drata Agent checks disk encryption, screen lock, antivirus and automatic updates on macOS 15 and 26, the two latest maintained Windows versions and LTS Linux releases. On Ubuntu, disk encryption evidence is uploaded by hand.
Auditors External auditors get their own portal at /auditor to review evidence, request information and raise findings. Audits have stages, dated milestones and a pre-audit evidence review. You bring your own audit firm. You assign auditors to each audit, they get an email invitation, and they review it in a read-only Audit Portal. A read-only access setting lets them see more than the assigned audit, still without edits. Audit Hub is on every plan.
Trust center A page at /trust with your frameworks, live control status, policies, subprocessors, an FAQ and documents behind an NDA. It can be private, split into profiles and served on your own domain, and it reports views, requests and downloads. Sold as separate plans. Foundation has a branded Trust Center with up to 100 approved domains and AI help with up to 100 questionnaires. Advanced allows 300 domains, and Enterprise has no limit.
