ProofTrail vs Secureframe

Secureframe is a compliance automation platform that Secureframe hosts on AWS, in a US or a UK data center. Its Fundamentals plan starts at $7,500 a year with one framework, it lists 35 frameworks and 300+ native integrations, and a Defense plan adds CMMC paperwork and a managed enclave. ProofTrail checks the same kinds of systems against 21 frameworks from one Docker image on a server you run, for $20 a year per installation.

Where the data lives

Secureframe is a hosted service on AWS, in US East or London. Its help center says backups stay in their region and data moves between them only on request.

ProofTrail is one Docker image you run on your own server, with SQLite holding the data. Integrations sync into that server, the device agent reports to it and the trust center is served from it.

Price

Secureframe's Fundamentals plan starts at $7,500 a year and includes one framework and one custom automated test. Complete and Defense are quoted.

ProofTrail costs $20 a year per installation, and one license key covers a production and a staging installation.

Breadth

Secureframe lists frameworks ProofTrail doesn't have, among them FedRAMP, NIS2, NIST 800-53 and SOX ITGC, and its Defense plan adds a System Security Plan, POA&M and a managed CUI enclave for CMMC. It also uses AI to answer security questionnaires, which ProofTrail has no equivalent for.

ProofTrail has CMMC Levels 1 and 2 among its 21 frameworks, with 260 integrations in its catalog, 28 of them through their own API driver.

Which one to pick

Pick ProofTrail if

  • You want your compliance data on a server you run.
  • You need several frameworks. Secureframe's plans include one.
  • You want to pay $20 a year per installation instead of from $7,500.

Pick Secureframe if

  • You don't want to run or update a server.
  • You need FedRAMP, NIST 800-53, SOX ITGC or another framework ProofTrail doesn't have.
  • You need a managed CUI enclave or System Security Plan tools for CMMC.
  • You want AI to answer security questionnaires.

The details

Detail ProofTrail Secureframe
Price $20 a year per installation. One license key covers 1 production and 1 staging installation. Fundamentals starts at $7,500 a year, with one framework. Complete, and Defense for CMMC, are quoted.
Where it runs and your data One Docker image on your own server runs the web server, the queue worker and the scheduler. The data lives in a SQLite database on that server, which also holds the queue and the cache. The source is available under the Elastic License 2.0. Secureframe hosts it on AWS, in US East or London, chosen when the account is set up. Backups stay in their region, and data moves between them only on request.
Frameworks 21 frameworks in 26 YAML files, as SOC 2's five criteria and CMMC's two levels each have a file: SOC 2, ISO 27001:2022, HIPAA, GDPR, PCI DSS 4.0.1, NIST CSF 2.0, CMMC Levels 1 and 2, CIS Controls 8.1, CSA STAR, Cyber Essentials, ISO 27017, ISO 27018, ISO 27701, ISO 42001, TISAX, Microsoft SSPA, DORA, CCPA, PIPEDA, DPDP and FCRA. Enabling one loads its controls, checks and policy templates. 35 on its frameworks page, counting NIST 800-53 Low, Moderate and High separately, among them SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA, GDPR, PCI DSS, CMMC 2.0, FedRAMP, NIS2, DORA, TISAX and ISO 42001, plus custom frameworks.
Controls and checks 140 shared controls plus 49 for single frameworks, and 184 checks. Checks re-run every day and whenever the data they read changes. Each failing person, device or system gets a task that moves from due to critical to failing on the check's deadline, and exceptions can carry an expiry date. Continuous control monitoring, automated evidence collection and a test library on every plan. Custom automated tests: 1 on Fundamentals, unlimited on Complete.
Integrations 260 in the catalog. 28 sync through their own API driver, among them AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, GitHub, GitLab, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Okta, Jamf and Jira. The others connect through SCIM 2.0 or uploaded exports, and 4 of the 260 can't be connected yet. CSV and JSON ingestion plans, webhooks and an API bring in anything else. 300+ native integrations. Custom integrations come with Complete.
Policy templates 45 templates written for ProofTrail: 27 policies, 13 procedures and 5 ISMS documents and records. Versions, approvals, reviewers, periodic reviews and acceptance tracked per staff member. When a template changes, the policies list shows which documents need an update. Pre-built policy templates, Comply AI for policies and policy acceptance tracked per person.
Staff An employee portal where staff accept policies, take trainings with quizzes (6 programs), report devices, check their MFA, request vendors, submit risks and report incidents. Onboarding and offboarding deadlines, background checks, and access reviews of critical systems. Onboarding and offboarding, security awareness training, policy acceptance and visibility of third-party tool access. Advanced user access reviews come with Complete.
Device checks An agent for macOS, Linux and Windows reports disk encryption, screen lock, firewall, anti-malware and OS updates every 4 hours. Staff can also report a device by hand in the portal. The Secureframe Agent checks disk encryption, antivirus, password policy, screen lock and firewall on macOS 13 or later and Windows 10 and 11. It also runs on Ubuntu, RHEL and CentOS, where some checks aren't supported.
Auditors External auditors get their own portal at /auditor to review evidence, request information and raise findings. Audits have stages, dated milestones and a pre-audit evidence review. You bring your own audit firm. Auditors reach your instance through their Audit Partner Console once you assign them to an audit, and can view and export evidence. Tests, frameworks and controls are hidden from them unless you share them. Secureframe has an Audit Partner Network.
Trust center A page at /trust with your frameworks, live control status, policies, subprocessors, an FAQ and documents behind an NDA. It can be private, split into profiles and served on your own domain, and it reports views, requests and downloads. On every plan, with an Advanced Trust Center on Complete. It offers custom domains and an automated NDA workflow. Document requests are limited to 15 a year on Fundamentals and unlimited on Complete.
