ProofTrail vs Sprinto
Sprinto is a compliance and GRC platform that Sprinto hosts, with regions in the United States, Europe, India and Australia. It automates 25+ frameworks, monitors across 300+ integrations and sells two plans, Foundation and Growth, through its sales team. ProofTrail has the same parts, a data library, checks that open tasks, an employee portal and a device agent, but it runs from one Docker image on a server you run.

Where the data lives
Sprinto is a hosted service, with regions in the United States, Europe, India and Australia.
ProofTrail is one Docker image you run on your own server, with SQLite holding the data. Integrations sync into that server, the device agent reports to it and the trust center is served from it.
The same shape
Both monitor people, devices and systems continuously, give staff a portal for policies, training and devices, and give auditors their own access to the evidence.
Sprinto automates more frameworks, 25+ against 21, and adds AI features ProofTrail doesn't have, such as AI answers to security questionnaires and AI vendor document reviews.
Price
Sprinto publishes no prices. Both plans go through sales, and extra frameworks are add-ons.
ProofTrail costs $20 a year per installation, and one license key covers a production and a staging installation.
Which one to pick
Pick ProofTrail if
- You want your compliance data on a server you run.
- You want a published price, $20 a year per installation, without a sales call.
- Your frameworks are among ProofTrail's 21.
Pick Sprinto if
- You don't want to run or update a server.
- You need a framework among Sprinto's that ProofTrail doesn't have.
- You want AI to answer security questionnaires and review vendor documents.
- You want an auditor from Sprinto's network.
The details
| Detail | ProofTrail | Sprinto |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $20 a year per installation. One license key covers 1 production and 1 staging installation. | Not published. Foundation and Growth are both sold through sales, with extra frameworks, enterprise risk management and multiple business units as add-ons. |
| Where it runs and your data | One Docker image on your own server runs the web server, the queue worker and the scheduler. The data lives in a SQLite database on that server, which also holds the queue and the cache. The source is available under the Elastic License 2.0. | Sprinto hosts it. Its API lists United States, Europe, India and Australia regions. |
| Frameworks | 21 frameworks in 26 YAML files, as SOC 2's five criteria and CMMC's two levels each have a file: SOC 2, ISO 27001:2022, HIPAA, GDPR, PCI DSS 4.0.1, NIST CSF 2.0, CMMC Levels 1 and 2, CIS Controls 8.1, CSA STAR, Cyber Essentials, ISO 27017, ISO 27018, ISO 27701, ISO 42001, TISAX, Microsoft SSPA, DORA, CCPA, PIPEDA, DPDP and FCRA. Enabling one loads its controls, checks and policy templates. | 25+ automated out of the box and 200+ digitized, among them SOC 2, ISO 27001, ISO 27017, ISO 27018, ISO 42001, NIS 2, CCPA, PIPEDA, UK GDPR and the EU AI Act. |
| Controls and checks | 140 shared controls plus 49 for single frameworks, and 184 checks. Checks re-run every day and whenever the data they read changes. Each failing person, device or system gets a task that moves from due to critical to failing on the check's deadline, and exceptions can carry an expiry date. | Continuous monitoring with automated evidence collection on Foundation. Growth adds programmable monitors and a rule engine for your own automation logic. |
| Integrations | 260 in the catalog. 28 sync through their own API driver, among them AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, GitHub, GitLab, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Okta, Jamf and Jira. The others connect through SCIM 2.0 or uploaded exports, and 4 of the 260 can't be connected yet. CSV and JSON ingestion plans, webhooks and an API bring in anything else. | Continuous monitoring across 300+ integrations. Custom workflows and the Sprinto API come with Growth. |
| Policy templates | 45 templates written for ProofTrail: 27 policies, 13 procedures and 5 ISMS documents and records. Versions, approvals, reviewers, periodic reviews and acceptance tracked per staff member. When a template changes, the policies list shows which documents need an update. | Editable Sprinto templates aligned with frameworks such as SOC 2 and ISO 27001, AI-assisted policies and acknowledgement campaigns. Multi-approval policy workflows come with Growth. |
| Staff | An employee portal where staff accept policies, take trainings with quizzes (6 programs), report devices, check their MFA, request vendors, submit risks and report incidents. Onboarding and offboarding deadlines, background checks, and access reviews of critical systems. | Onboarding and offboarding workflows, ready-to-use training and tests, and an employee portal. Custom training modules come with Growth. |
| Device checks | An agent for macOS, Linux and Windows reports disk encryption, screen lock, firewall, anti-malware and OS updates every 4 hours. Staff can also report a device by hand in the portal. | Dr. Sprinto, its own app for Windows, macOS and Linux, checks the OS version, disk encryption, screen lock, antivirus and firewall. It runs on physical devices only. |
| Auditors | External auditors get their own portal at /auditor to review evidence, request information and raise findings. Audits have stages, dated milestones and a pre-audit evidence review. You bring your own audit firm. | You onboard your auditor to a Sprinto dashboard limited to the current audit. Foundation includes access to auditors in Sprinto's network, and bringing your own auditor takes Growth. |
| Trust center | A page at /trust with your frameworks, live control status, policies, subprocessors, an FAQ and documents behind an NDA. It can be private, split into profiles and served on your own domain, and it reports views, requests and downloads. | A public trust center with a custom domain on Foundation, with AI answers to 20 security questionnaires a year. Enterprise Trust Management is an add-on. |
